RESUMO

Objective: To determine and compare the remineralizing capacity of self-assembling peptide (SAP) P11-4 and casein phosphopeptides­amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) on enamel. Material and Methods: Enamel samples were divided into 2 groups. Group I was treated with Self­assembling peptide (SAP) P11-4 and group II with casein phosphopeptides-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP). In both groups, remineralizing capacity was assessed at baseline, 2 weeks, 6 weeks and 12 weeks. Student's t- test and ANOVA were applied, with the significance level set at 5%. Results: The mean calcium weight % was evaluated at baseline, 2 weeks, 6 weeks and 12 weeks. In Group I, there was increase in mean value (62.12 ± 1.24) from baseline to 12 weeks (67.36 ± 2.14). However, there was decrease in phosphate weight % from 37.16 ± 2.52 at baseline to 35.72 ± 2.11 at 12 weeks. In Group II, mean calcium weight % was 64.18 ± 1.52 at baseline, which ultimately increased to 66.01 ± 2.03 at 12 weeks. Phosphate weight % showed reduction from 37.34 ± 2.23 at baseline to 35.04 ± 2.02 at 12 weeks. Ca/P ratio showed significant improvement. There was significant difference in Ca/P ratio at 2 weeks, 6 weeks and 12 weeks in both groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: Self-assembling peptide (SAP) P11-4 found to be more effective and efficient as compared to casein phosphopeptides­amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP).

OBJECTIVES: Prognosis of the avulsed teeth is mostly affected by extraoral dry period and storage medium used to store teeth before reimplantation. However, ability of storage media can affect cell viability and success of treatment. Various storage media were tried with some success. The present study was undertaken to comparatively evaluate the efficacy of hank's balanced salt solution (HBSS), propolis, Aloe vera, and pomegranate juice (PJ) in preserving the vitality of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells of avulsed teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty orthodontically extracted sound teeth with healthy PDL were selected for the present study. Selected teeth were randomly divided into study groups (10 in each) and 5 each as positive and negative control groups. All the teeth were immersed immediately after extraction into respective storage media. Data were statistically analyzed using IBM SPSS software for Windows, Version 19.0., IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA. Analysis of variance and multiple range were done using Tukey's honestly significant difference with level of significance at 5% (P > 0.05). RESULTS: Propolis (285,000 viable cells with standard deviation 4.11028 and standard error of 1.38097) showed more viable PDL cells followed by HBSS, A. vera, and PJ. CONCLUSION: Propolis, A. vera, and PJ can be used as an alternative tooth storage media.

RESUMO

AIM AND BACKGROUND: An odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) or keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) and giant cell granuloma (GCG) in the jaws are common lesions which have been studied extensively in detail over the years. However, a lesion showing features of both is exceptionally rare and is reported only twice in the literature till date. CASE DESCRIPTION: A rare case of OKC in mandible showing foci of GCG like areas is reported in a 29 years old male patient. CONCLUSION: It seems to be a collision lesion, though the possibility of KCOT showing a reactive response to form giant cells or it being a rare variant cannot be totally ruled out. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This entity requires aggressive treatment since biological behavior of this unique lesion is difficult to predict unless more of such lesions are reported and followed up in future.

RESUMO

Talon cusp is an accessory cusp similar to a projection, extending from the cingulum or cemento-enamel junction to the incisal edge. It occurs on labial or palatal surfaces of primary or permanent anterior teeth in both arches. This accessory cusp can occur as an isolated entity or in association with other dental anomalies. Occurrence of a talon cusp on supernu-merary teeth is rare and uncommon. This paper reports an unusual case of a talon cusp on a supernumerary tooth in association with mesiodens.
